2. Anatomical Position and Terminology
Standard Anatomical Position
The body is upright, facing forward.
Arms at the sides.
Palms facing forward.
Legs slightly apart, feet flat on the floor and pointing forward.
This position serves as a reference point for describing body parts and their locations.
3. Anatomical Terms of Direction
Term | Meaning | Example |
Superior (Cranial) | Toward the head or upper part of the structure | The head is superior to the chest. |
Inferior (Caudal) | Away from the head or lower part | The stomach is inferior to the heart. |
Anterior (Ventral) | Toward the front | The sternum is anterior to the spine. |
Posterior (Dorsal) | Toward the back | The heart is posterior to the breastbone. |
Medial | Toward the midline of the body | The nose is medial to the eyes. |
Lateral | Away from the midline | The ears are lateral to the nose. |
Proximal | Closer to the point of attachment or origin | The shoulder is proximal to the hand. |
Distal | Farther from the point of attachment | The fingers are distal to the elbow. |
