Concept of Mental health and Mental Hygiene

▪︎ Mental Health :

It is refers to a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being.


▪︎ It affects how individuals think, feel, and act, as well as how they handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions.


▪︎ Good mental health helps individuals cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community.


▪︎ Mental Hygiene :  

the science and practice of maintaining and promoting mental health.

▪︎ It involves strategies and habits that help prevent mental illness and ensure emotional stability.

▪︎ These may include proper rest, physical exercise, stress management, healthy relationships, positive thinking, and seeking professional help when needed.


▪︎ Mental hygiene plays a key role in building resilience and improving the quality of life.

  1. Changes in Mood:

    • Persistent sadness, irritability, or mood swings.

    • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.

  2. Behavioral Changes:

    • Withdrawal from social activities, family, or friends.

    • Decline in performance at school, college, or work.

    • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities.

  3. Cognitive Impairments:

    • Trouble concentrating, memory issues, or confusion.

    • Negative thoughts or excessive worry.

  4. Changes in Sleep Patterns:

    • Insomnia or excessive sleeping.

    • Nightmares or disturbed sleep.

  5. Changes in Appetite or Weight:

    • Significant weight loss or gain.

    • Changes in eating habits (overeating or not eating at all).

  6. Substance Use:

    • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

    • Dependency or addiction.

  7. Physical Symptoms:

▪︎ Levels of Prevention in Mental Health:

A. Primary Prevention (Health Promotion & Specific Protection):

Goal: Prevent the onset of mental health problems.

Strategies:

  • Mental health education in schools and communities.

  • Stress management programs.

  • Parenting education and antenatal counseling.

  • Awareness campaigns on substance abuse, suicide prevention.

  • Promoting healthy lifestyles (exercise, sleep, nutrition).

B. Secondary Prevention (Early Diagnosis & Prompt Treatment):

Goal: Detect mental illness early and provide timely treatment.

Strategies:
