Immediate Basic Care of Neonates
1. APGAR Score: Check baby’s color, heart rate, reflexes, muscle tone, and breathing at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. Scores range from 0-10; higher is better.
2. Keep Baby Warm:
• Dry the baby immediately after birth.
• Use a warm blanket or a radiant warmer.
• Encourage skin-to-skin contact with the mother.
3. Clear Airways:
• Gently suction the baby’s nose and mouth to remove fluids.
4. Cutting the Cord:
• Clamp and cut the umbilical cord after it stops pulsating.
5. Eye Care:
• Apply antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.
6. Vitamin K Injection:
• Give an injection to prevent bleeding disorders.
7. ID Bands:
• Put identification bands on the baby to prevent mix-ups.
Daily Routine Care of Neonates
1. Feeding:
• Breastfeed on demand every 2-3 hours, or formula feed every 3-4 hours.
2. Diapering:
• Change diapers frequently to keep the baby dry and comfortable.
• Keep the umbilical cord area clean and dry until it falls off.
3. Bathing:
• Sponge bathe the baby until the umbilical cord stump falls off.
• Use warm water (around 37-38°C).
4. Safe Sleep:
• Always place the baby on their back to sleep.
• Use a firm mattress with no loose bedding or toys.
5. Skin Care:
• Keep the diaper area dry and apply cream if needed.
• Use mild, baby-friendly moisturizers.
6. Bonding:
• Encourage tummy time when the baby is awake to strengthen muscles.
• Talk to, hold, and make eye contact with the baby to promote bonding
